Clip Chart
Based on an idea I got from my son's third grade teacher, the Clip Chart is a wonderful replacement for the somewhat tired color-coded pocket chart.
Although the one I put together for my students was made with construction paper that was laminated, this heavy-duty vinyl version, produced by a sign-making firm in southen California, looks a heck of a lot better. Not only that, but it will last for years.

Wooden Clothespins
Other than the chart itself, the only other thing you need are some clothespins, one per student. This pack of 40 should get you through the year.
